February Polls Must Hold As Scheduled – Council Of State Tells Jonathan
The tension over possible postponement of the scheduled February general election subsided rapidly on Thursday as the National Council of State voted for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to go ahead with the conduct of the elections.
Discordant tunes had before the Council of State's meeting continued to trail a hint that the elections may be postponed as different groups and individuals voiced conflicting views. Most pro-government groups, including the Edwin Clark led Southern Peoples Assembly had called for postponement of the polls, while they threatened to cause the boycott of the election in the southern region of Nigeria in the event that INEC went ahead to conduct the election.
Earlier, Lagos Lawyer, Femi Falana had said a possible postponement of the February polls would amount to an invitation to Chaos, just as the All Progressives Congress (APC) insisted that the election must go on as scheduled.
The Council of State meeting recorded almost a full house with most of the former Heads of state in attendance safe for former President Olusegun Obasanjo who stayed away.
The which was held to decide the fate of the forthcoming 2015 general elections started at about 11.am. The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), led his team of other APC governors to the presidential villa.
