Ondo varsity reverses naming building after Mimiko

The Adekunle Ajasin University,
Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, is to
reverse the naming of its new Senate
Building after Governor Olusegun
Mimiko.
Mimiko's name is boldly inscribed in
front of the five-floor edifice, as
approved by the school authorities.
However, the Vice Chancellor of the
university, Prof. Femi Mimiko, told
journalists on Tuesday that the
governor had humbly turned down
the honour.
According to him, Governor Mimiko
will not want to be vested with such
an honour while he remains the
visitor to the institution and still
serving as the governor of the state.
"He believes that the institution could
decide to name the building after him
after he has left office," Prof. Mimiko
said.
The vice chancellor, who was
addressing the media on the activities
of the university's week-long 5th
Convocation Ceremony, praised the
humility and modesty of Governor
Mimiko. He said he had been a strong
support to the institution in its quest
to provide the state-of-the-art
infrastructure for the university.
He said a total of 6,341 graduands
from the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013
sets would be convocating. Of these
numbers, he said 1,519 were of the
Faculty of Science, representing the
largest chunk of the graduands.
"Of the two sets, 26 graduated in First
Class; 1,414 in Second Class Upper
Division; 3,505 in Second Class Lower
Division; 993 in Third Class.
"Also listed in the convocation
brochure this year are the names of
some 169 graduates, whose names
could not be captured in the brochure
of the 4th Convocation Ceremony
held on March 22, 2013," Mimiko said.
He also said the convocation
ceremony would also feature a
lecture, titled, "The Break-up of
Nigeria: Myths, Realities and
Implications." It would be delivered
by former President of the Senate, Dr.
Iyorcha Ayu, on November 5
Mimiko also noted that 412
graduands would be receiving
postgraduate degrees, 10, of whom
were in the PhD category.
While listing the achievements of the
his leadership in the last few years,
Mimiko said, "As a complement to
building its academic integrity,
Adekunle Ajasin University continues
to grow in terms of infrastructure and
physical development.
"As a university and an
administration, we have our eyes on
the future. We have an unwavering
commitment to the vision of our
founding fathers to build '….a first
class university in research,
knowledge, character and service to
humanity."
