Adamawa fishermen claim sighting missing NAF jet

Some fishermen in Kwaine Village of Adamawa State have claimed finding the missing Nigerian Air Force, NAF, Alpha fighter jet, in River Benue.

The Defence Headquarters had on September 14, 2014 declared jet with two pilots missing in the state.

In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, on the incident, he had said: "An Alpha Jet (NAF 466) belonging to the Nigerian Air Force is missing around Adamawa State. The aircraft, with two pilots on board, left Yola at about 10:45 a.m. on 12th September, 2014 on a routine operational mission and was expected back by 12:00 noon. Since then all efforts to establish contact with the aircraft have not yielded any positive result."

The fishermen told Nigerian Pilot that they found parts of the jet following the reduction of the water level of the river as the dry season approaches.

One of the fishermen in Kwaine village in Demsa Local Government area, about 50 kilometers from Yola, Mr.Audu Vrati, said they discovered some parts of an aircraft inside the River Benue.

He said that they were aware that a plane was declared missing by the military authorities, stressing that its parts was not visible till now because the water level of the river was high because of the rainy season.

He said now that the water level had reduced, most parts of the jet had been seen and urged the military to come to the area to remove it.

Vrati said although that he had limited knowledge of the aviation industry, what he saw on the river was not the wreck of a vehicle or a dead animal but the parts of an aircraft.

Members of the Boko Haram sect had claimed shooting down the plane and showed a video clip of the beheading of one of the pilots to support their allegations.

The missing plane, according to NAF sources, has the inscription KG 6392,
