Anambra Woman Gets 30 Years Jail Term For Human Trafficking

The Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja has sentenced one Nneka Ebelechukwu (30) from Idemili local government area of Anambra state to 30 years imprisonment for human trafficking.
She was found guilty of organizing foreign trips for young girls and subsequently subjecting them to prostitution.
The prosecution was disclosed in a statement issued by Arinze Orakwue, Head of Media and Communications of National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP).
Orakwue said the offence was punishable under section 16 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act (2003).
"The accused was charged on a three count of organizing foreign travels which promotes prostitution and the case was arraigned in court on the 9th of June, 2013," the NAPTIP official said.
Orakwue added that Justice Adeniyi Ademola condemned the act in strict terms and called on parents to desist from handing their children to human traffickers for greener pastures and actually consider offers to assist, with a pinch of salt.
Executive Secretary of NAPTIP Beatrice Jedy-Agba was satisfied with the conviction,She said the punishment was commensurate with the offence.
Jedy-Agba added that the agency had continuously advocated for stiffer penalties for offenders of human trafficking as this will deter intending human traffickers from embarking on such crimes.
She said the agency would continue to boost its prosecution processes and would not relent in its efforts of stamping out human trafficking from the country.
